History
- Born to poor parents in Afsaana but abandoned at an early age, left with relatives.
- Not happy or unhappy, just exploited for child labor purposes. His relatives ran an inn and a fish monger stall in Afsaana and Darras put work in where required until he got sick of it and left at 10 or 11.
- Started living down on the docks, first just as a nuisance, then as a cabin boy or ship hand when he got more skills.
- Working as a sailor at 15, started sailing under Captain Harris aboard the Well Path, escorting merchants across Rialto Bay.
- Well Path was attacked in duty; Harris killed. Darras killed the pirate who did it but was injured, took fever. Woke up to a robbery. Killed the perpetrators and jumped overboard to avoid consequences. Washed up on Brandel's Reach and joined a pirate crew.
- Sailed under various captains, seized and jailed a few times, nearly hanged twice, evaded capture dozens of times. Started building a reputation for himself as daring, bold, clever, useful in a pinch.
- Between stints, hung around seaside villages just chilling and existing. Bought a cottage in Antiva. Met a beautiful woman in a tavern during a terrible storm. Drank with her, slept with her, and in the morning, realized she was the love of his life.
- Darras gets his own ship, the Fancy. Becomes a successful pirate captain.
- Simultaneous to this, a fellow captain, Tavinao, is developing a rep as a cool guy... or as someone to watch out for. Darras has a vested interest in Tavinao's quartermaster but, after questioning the quartermaster for details of Taviano's rep, learns very little and parts with the quartermaster on somewhat rocky terms.
- Taviano's rep grows; Darras doesn't like what he is hearing. News comes that Taviano's quartermaster either died or disappeared. Darras tries to low-key follow some intel. Tracks some info to Kirkwall, under guise of a big payout for his crew.
Personality
Darras Rivain is honest, brave, and free, the soul of liberty. He is loyal and fair, and on the square, and most importantly: Darras Rivain is a professional pirate.
FREEDOM. Darras believes strongly in the importance of freedom. He's like a Libertarian. He wants to do as he pleases, to have the things that he wants and do the things he wants to do. Those around him should be equally allowed to do as they please. It is through strength that you protect the things that you care about. If you care enough about them, then you'll prepare yourself to defend them--selfish, but puts everyone in fair running.
On the other side of the coin of freedom, Darras' value on personal freedom directly disenfranchises a lot of people that are not as well off or as strong as he is. Also allows people to live by a code of conduct that is not as ethical as Darras'. Just because he opposes slavery doesn't mean everyone will. He does his best to ignore this.
BEAUTY. Darras likes pretty things. He values a challenge but clean simplicity of form, and his thirst for plunder is largely for the benefit of his crew, keeping them sated and therefor loyal. While he has value for treasure, he prefers to spend it, not hoard it, and to enjoy himself.
On the other side of the coin of beauty, Darras' lifestyle can stray toward the hedonistic. Also he likes to gamble--with his coin, and with his life. He's a risk-taker and a trouble-maker. Danger? Hah. He laughs in the face of danger!
"TRUTH". Darras lies mostly by omission and by exaggeration. He lies frequently, and he lies well. He is a master storyteller, and has several versions of his past--childhood, origin story, the life that he has lived to date--that he will tell, with details dependent largely on his audience. He is a master at embellishment. He cultivates the stories that he tells and the stories that others tell about him, in order to create a perception
On the other side of the coin of "truth", Darras' lies and his irreverence make him impossible to really know. There is only one person he has really opened up to, and he tells stories even during those conversations.
LOVE. Darras believes in true love. He also believes in free love. He is confident in his ability to get some, and is occasionally unfaithful even when in a committed relationship--partially to keep up his rep, and partially because he can stray toward hedonism in his quest for freedom. He struggles with his own feelings of jealousy but ultimately trusts his partners to be smart, to do what they feel is right.
There is no other side to the coin of love, except that it leaves him vulnerable. If it came down to it, there is one life that Darras would prioritize above all others. But the owner of that life is a closely-kept secret.
Opinions & Affiliations
NOBILITY. fuck off.
LAW AND ORDER. fuck off.
PIRATES WHO HAVE A CODE OF ETHICS. yes.
PIRATES WHO HAVE A DUBIOUS CODE OF ETHICS. probably yes. the less senseless murder, the better.
PIRATES WHO HAVE FEW ETHICS. fuck off. the less senseless murder, the better. the less slavery, the better. Darras values freedom above all else, so anyone impeding freedom is scum.
EVERYTHING ELSE. probably okay. pretty chill with just about everyone as long as they're chill with him. his crew, and other pirate crews, are a mixed bag of races and people, so he has had good and bad experiences with everyone.

- Has been living around ships all his life. Captains his own ship now. Very familiar with sailing and sea travel
- Good at thinking on his feet and improvising
- Master liar and storyteller, unflappable and unstumpable, has a story and a reason for everything, even if he just now thought of it
- Pirate connections! A well-known captain
WEAKNESSES.
- Pirate connections! He's got some enemies and also some shit to get back to
- Master liar. Would lie to his own mother, if he knew who she was
- Reckless, will risk a lot
- A fighter, not a negotiator.
- Can't read or write very well
- Superstitious
Inventory
- clothes (nice pirate coat, boots, trousers, piratey shirt)
- pirate hat, very fetch
- pirate belt, big showy belt buckle
- four rings, 3 simple gold, 1 gold set with a big flashy ruby
- his falchion and scabbard
- 4-5 knives
- 1 leather satchel
- 1 cat, Rosana, a small tabby
- the Fancy, a small frigate that's dropped anchor up the Wounded Coast, hidden for now, containing some other stuff - no treasure or real cargo, just general food and water supplies that are running a little low since Kirkwall is a stop-off at the end of a long journey. small treasures and stuff in that Darras has a cabin on the ship. the Fancy won't be permanently around!
- and these don't count as inventory per se but Darras also has a small pirate crew of NPCs with him, whp will eventually go away so don't worry I'm not setting up a shop of NPCs
Motivation
TREASURE. and news. and, eventually: compelled to stay by love. and stuff.
